In The Last of the Wine, two young Athenians, Alexias and Lysis, compete in the palaestra, journey to the Olympic games, fight in the wars against Sparta, and study under Socrates. As their relationship develops, Renault expertly conveys Greek culture, showing the impact of this supreme philosopher whose influence spans epochs.
Apart from Alexander, Alexias (and his friend Phaidon) are my favorite Renault characters. Although they are not as illustrious as Alexander they have a quiet dignity and compassion that makes them admirable in more than one ways. However that compassion and pity and open - mindness that they excibit makes them less realistic.

If you are romantic at heart then this is the book for you.
