I voted his fame. People at that time didn't have a sense of "romantic love". Thst was created later in the Middle Ages but Alexander, like most men of his age, did have an overwhelming need to have glory that would allow him in a way to be imortal.
I think it was Hephaestion-- because after he died, it seemed that Alexander really lost the will to keep going. Something vital was gone. And you see this happen with a lot of old couples-- when one goes, the other follows fairly shortly.
